Imagine roasted barley, chicory and rye that are combined with organic herbs to make a beverage that taste like coffee. This doesn't really sound possible and if it did taste like coffee, it probably tastes like a no brand bag of ground coffee that has been sitting on the shelf a while.
I got a chance to review certified organic Ayurvedic Roast. The zen of Herbal Coffee. It is essential for my mood that I get at least one good cup of coffee in the morning. Little things that can throw the taste off can drive me mad. Such as, bitterness from the coffee pot needing to be cleaned, or the smell I get when the hubs makes coffee because he convinced we all are lumberjacks. The point I am trying to stress is that I have a routine and I don't like the coffee being messed with. But, which prices going up so high, it is getting harder to justify my self-indulgent habit of coffee drinking. I went downtown and the can of Maxwell I usually get was marked at $15.99! That is complete craziness. So I have decided to try and cut myself down to just a couple cups in the morning and water the rest of the day... I know I will fail a lot in the beginning! But I need to lower the caffeine anyway because I do get bogging headaches when I don't drink it.
So I was looking forward to trying this coffee substitute with health benefits and 100% caffeine free. The package we got was enough to make about 3 cups. It said to use 1 teaspoon -tablespoon per 8oz of water. It can be made in a percolator, french press, or brewed as loose tea. If you are brewing it as loose tea, make sure to boil for at least 5 minutes. It suggests using milk, rice milk, or almond and soy milk. It can also be ground in a coffee grinder to make espresso.
It looks like the chunky instant coffee when I poured it into the filter. But the smell was quite nice. You could actually smell a hint of chocolate. My husband, who does not like chocolate that much picked up on it first, but said it smelled good. After brewing, I almost didn't want to try it. The smell changed into what I thought was going to be a rough tasting coffee. It smelled potent even though I added more water if anything. But then surprise came again. After smelling it once it was brewed, I was shocked when I took my first sip.
It actually tasted like coffee and was pretty darn good. Just like the package says it has a nutty / chocolate flavor in it and is relaxing. But, I do have to say, it has an after snap. I am a firm believer that flavors should be tasted at the same time and not try to come back for a second round. I was not impressed with this nutty after taste and it actually made me stop drinking it after about half a cup. My husband however, because there is a law out there somewhere for us to be opposite, liked it a lot. He drank his right down and went back for a second cup.
My overall thoughts is... get rid of the after-taste and I would definitely incorporate this coffee into my daily routine so I can get start being healthier. Since this coffee is non-acidic, caffeine free, helps maximize the body's ability to resist stress, is a powerful antioxidant, nerve relaxant, and has calming, purifying herbs, shows there are many reasons to at least try it and work on replacing your regular brew. I am a tough cookie with swapping coffee or creamers. I am telling you, you will be surprised with this one. It was also awarded the Taster's Choice Award :)
