Hooper Finds A Family by Jane Paley - a book review

Hooper Finds A Family, A Hurricane Katrina's Dog Survival Tale is a new book that was written by Jane Paley with 8-12 year old children in mind.  This charming read is a fictional tale of a real dog that survived the hurricane. Most of this story really happened. It is written in Hooper's perspective and really does a great job of putting you in the scene and helping you feel what Hooper must have felt through that horrible storm. From a loving family where he gets spoiled with meat bones to wading down a flooded road trying to not be food himself. Poor Hooper goes through an emotional roller coaster when he gets rescued to feel safe with people that can't keep him so he feels sad and rejected.
I have been reading this book to my 3 boys at night before they go to sleep. My 3 year old even stayed by my side to hear what happened next. I think this was due to the dog being the main character. My 5 year old was in charge of telling us where we had left off from the night before. He did very well with this book. My 9 year old asked to read it more after I had read 3 chapters. So with a night light he fell asleep with Hooper in hand. It was a winner over all in our house hold!
Hooper Finds A Family is sold for $15.99 and you can buy it here. Some of the proceeds when you buy this book will go to Labs4Rescue which matches stray labs with loving homes. This is the same organization that matched Hooper with Jane Paley (author of this book). Hooper is now a certified therapy dog that goes with Jane to schools and libraries where the author reads to young children and let them do the same to Hooper. This program is designed to help children find enjoyment reading.

About the author:
Paley was the director of community relations for ABC Television, and her ABC Notebook educational programs were awarded an Emmy and a National Education Association Award. As a partner in Paley-Price Productions, she wrote and produced numerous family-oriented programs for HBO (she was co-creator of two HBO Family network children's series), PBS, and Lucasfilm, among others. Paley is also an assistant professor in the Division of Mass Communication at St. John’s University in Queens, New York.

This was a great book and my three sons were in love with this tale and the lovable pup Hooper. It makes a great addition to our family library.
