With hurricane weather here and more to come, this is the perfect time to tell you about a great lamps that Think Geek has called the Sun and Moon Jar. I am constantly on the look out for things that don't need batteries. I am so tired of buying, charging or recharging batteries it's not funny. Everything should just be solar powered. That is why I love these jars so much!
Sun and Moon Jars are canning jars with diffused glass that has a lamp kit in them that charges by the sun. You put them out in the sun during the day (or in a sunlight window) for a few hours and the solar cell charges the battery to run the low energy LED light inside. The diffused glass is to give the appearance that it is true sunlight or moon glow being stored up. It also makes it so you can't see any of the mechanism inside. All you see is a great looking canning jar that caught the sun light or moon glow.
These jars are not only great to look at and make a good conversation piece but they are also a great way to let your little ones know how solar power works. When you open the jar, there is a switch on the inside on the top that you can turn to charge or auto. Obviously, when you put them outside you have the switch on charge.. you can keep it on this setting when you bring them inside too if you don't want them to turn on yet. Otherwise, when they are done charging, switch it to auto and when the sensor detects it is getting dark, the lamp turns on.
Think Geek sent us out the sun and moon jar in yellow and blue. They also have a great pink moon that looks purple. I keep the yellow one in the boys room because they already have a blue night light in there but they think these things are cool. Also, I'm not gonna lie, the blue attracts me like the zapping lights do to mosquitos! I love the blue. The yellow one is not as strong. It is more of a soft and warm glow whereas the blue is bright and stands out. The pictures are not much justice but hopefully they give you enough of an idea. I just left them outside during the day while I did my housework. When it got dusk I brought them in and turned them on at night. When I turned them on around 10pm one night, they still had a charge and turned on the next morning. So it is great to know they don't die out shortly after turning them on!
