It is easy to get lost in all the gift guides, shopping sprees and crossed off lists but I always take time to make sure that my boys remember why it is we celebrate Christmas and what it is really about. Everyone can say what they want, but it didn't start with a big fat man in a red suit but was born out of a birth itself. I think I do quite well in mixing the two together by showing my boys that Santa wanted to express the love and celebrate by giving to God's children all over the world. Last year, things were tough. We had a very kind gesture bestowed upon us and this year we would like to pay that back. There are so many ways that we can do that, and one of them is by donating through World Vision.
Last year over 800,000 people around the world were impacted by gifts that were given through this great organization and they weren't wii games or ipads. These gifts were the gifts that keep giving... giving milk to a young baby that needs the calcium, giving chickens to a family that can now eat the eggs or giving shares to a sewing machine so a young mother can make clothes for her family and make a living. When I looked through the catalog, I was quite surprised at how many different ways you could help people all over the world.
You can donate anywhere from $16 to $2,000 either buying food for a family in the US for a day or sponsoring an animal of the month to 12 different families in Cambodia. The options are endless. You will also receive tokens of appreciation in the form of jewelry made by young girls that were sexually exploited or maybe you will get a letter from a child you have sponsored. This is such a give give situation. There is no better feeling then to be able to give a gift that is self sustainable and know that you have made a difference in someones life for the better.
Here are a couple of examples of gifts and prices just to give you an idea of what you can do to help:
$25 will give a promise pack: Where aids and extreme poverty have left many children alone without hope, this backpack full of basic school supplies, hygiene items and a warm blanket can remind them that they have a promise in life and a reason to keep the hope alive.
$100 loan for a woman in need. These loans are perfect for women to get crafting supplies needed for making income and when the loan is paid back, it is lent to another providing over and over again.
$75 will buy a goat. This goat is more then just a companion for a young child. It will give them milk and cheese and maybe be a part of more down the line.
$35 a month will be sponsoring one lucky child, which I don't see why it would matter, but you can actually choose the gender, age and place of living for your child that you can sponsor.
Even if you didn't get a thank you in return, I can assure you, the gift would be appreciated more then a thank you could express. However, when you donate to the Maximum Impact Fund you do get free gifts. For helping spread the word I got a set of beautiful ornaments that can serve as a small reminder each year to share the true spirit of Christmas and help someone in need.
This special star and cross were made by 'Zakale' wire (this means re-use) and bead inspirations from Nairobi. They are made by a group of Kenyan artisans reclaiming their own lives from poverty. They are well made (more sturdy then they look) and will look fantastic on my tree. You can get these, with a heart ornament also included, with a donation of $150.
Please take a moment and go to www.worldvisiongifts.org or call them at 1.888.511.6511 to see how you may be able to help this year. I'm sure we all can remember when a stranger reached out and helped us in a time of need. One that I can think of is when I went grocery shopping one time. My card decided not to work while at checkout on a busy day. I apologized to the people behind me and asked the clerk to ring it through again. There should be no problem with the card. The lady behind me paid for all my groceries that day (over $50 if I remember right) and gave me a hug and said God Bless You. A reminder that kindness is still out there in full swing and you can be apart of it! Especially in this great week of Thanksgiving.

As thanks for sharing this information for World Vision, they gave me the ornaments pictured above. I am fully behind everything in this post and would have shared it regardless. Happy Thanksgiving.
