As of January 1st of 2012, a contract between Walgreens and Express Scripts has ceased to exist. For the past year, Walgreens has been trying to negotiate for a new contract to keep Express Scripts as their pharmacy provider. However, an agreement could not be reached and the contract expired on December 31st of 2011. This includes all Walgreen Pharmacies nationwide and the Duane Reade pharmacies in the NY City area.
Express Scripts was the 'middle man' working between Walgreens and their supplier. The dispute between them grew when profits per prescription among retail pharmacies have been flat or declining... Express Scripts profit has grown at more than 2 times the average of peers in healthcare. This among other things were making the relationship between Walgreens and Express Scripts unbalanced.
If you have prescription plans that are managed by Express Scripts, you may need to check with your local Walgreens pharmacist to see if you are impacted. Walgreens wants the transition to be as painless as possible, so they have come up with the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club . This is an annual club that an individual can join for only $5 with it's special January promotion. For a family membership, it is only $10. Members will receive savings on over 8,000 brand name and all generic prescriptions. After January the price will go to it's regular price at $20 for an individual and $35 for the family plan.
Support Walgreen and connect with Walgreens on Twitter or like Walgreens on Facebook. Be in the know or get familiar with the changes that are going on.
