Sunstruck by Mayra Calvani book review

Hello Everyone. What a beautiful day! Here it is officially spring and it is finally starting to feel like it! Today I wanted to talk about a book I just finished yesterday by Mayra Calvani. I don't know where else to start, then by saying that this was one of the most interesting books I have ever read. My husband and I both read it in just a couple days.
The realistic, with the mixing of weird circumstances and characters, all make this play out like a long and detailed dream for me. You know what I mean, the dream that has your family and friends but they do things they would never do and their traits that you like or dislike get exaggerated.
Let me give you a brief description of some of the bigger characters.

Daniella: main character, always attracted to the scraggly looking 'I wanna be this when I grow up' kind of men, aspiring architect, and pet lover (owns a rare breed of cat named Commando)

Tony: Daniella's new boyfriend, twisted artist, drug addict, spontaneous, and is hated by Commando

Ismael: Daniella's ex-husband, he's still in love with Daniella, hates all successful artists for living out his dream,  has a need to be famous, drug addict, pet lover who wants to build a hotel where you rent a room with an exotic animal of your choice to take care of while you stay

Irene(Lady Dracula): Ismael's new wife, a scary looking woman that collects ancient torture devices and wears blood masks to try and keep her face youthful.. she freaks out everyone she meets but loves Ismael dearly

El Zorro (the X character): An angry mystery criminal that slashes the letter Z on the exposed bottoms of women wearing mini-skirts.

Marcela: Daniella's mother, a bitter but attractive and sweet lady that gets a group of women together to start a revolution to send a message to El Zorro

Overall, I was quite intrigued by this book and I didn't see the end coming. That being said, I do wish there were more clues to show us why the ending was the way it was. It was definitely unexpected but in my mind a little far fetched. I enjoyed the book for the most part. Even though I didn't like how God was talked about or religion was portrayed, it never crossed the boundary into unacceptable.

My husband's opinion on the book was that it was mediocre until the end. If it wasn't for the ending he really wouldn't have cared for it. But with the twist at the end he felt satisfied and said overall it was pretty good (a little out there, but pretty good.)

I would recommend this book for the ones that like interesting books with dark humor (which I can appreciate). Even though it had a few questionable patches for me, it left an impression and hoping for a follow up. I think she is very talented and can paint an interesting picture :) I will be checking out her children's books! Click here to see her kids site Mayra's Secret Bookcase.
