From The Publisher:
Our generation needs a REFORMATION. But a single person won't lead it. A single event won't define it.
Our reformation will be a movement of reformers living compassionately, creatively, courageously for the cause of Christ.
This reformation will not be born of a new discovery. It will be the rediscovery of something old, something ancient.
Something PRIMAL.
Isn't that the truth?! I have seen a reformation sort of bubbling under the surface. You know, there are a lot of Christians who feel misrepresented and see their faith is not being shared or seen in the right way. With all the depressing current events, we need our fill of the Spirit. I know I do! I have not been to church in a while. I can use every excuse in the book, and even if they are true, the main reason being that church has lost that feeding ability for me. I don't feel I get anything from it, in fact, in some cases it seems to strengthen un-Christian like actions or thoughts. That is NOT what church is supposed to be like!
This book was a lovely reminder for me to forget about the logical and rekindle the compassion. I have known for a while now that people are bickering over the stupidest of things. I watched a show the other day on tv where they displayed Jesus as nothing more than a political genius starting a cult to gain followers. I have never seen him in this light but one thing caught my attention in this show. They were supposedly disproving all these facts in the bible such as... he was never born in a stable, the route we all take when he got crucified is totally wrong and people visit the wrong tomb! I was laughing because even though they were sitting there disproving facts... in the same note they were proving there were places at all! Why are we arguing over where he walked ... it should only matter that he walked at all. So what if it says wine and not juice and tell me please what gets lost in translation between the word love and agape? None of this matters to me because the message is loud and clear. I have always thought a favorite motto to a loved church I was a part of is it in a nutshell.... "It's not a religion, it's a relationship"
I love how Mark talks in this book. You can tell a few things about him right away. First off, he is really freak'n smart and he has the right kind of patience to explain everything in this book so we can understand what he is teaching us. I could list many examples in this book on what I mean and if I do dare to say so... and I don't mean to sound blasphemous at all!.. However, the examples that he gives are similar to the parables that Jesus used when teaching people on faith. What I mean by this is that they are easy to understand, sound examples that can't be argued and very effective.
Yet another read that I feel blessed to have read and have sitting on my shelf. I don't normally read a book over and over ( although there are the exceptions) and this may be one of them. It is a great reference book and can easily be read multiple times!
